Vertical Wildflower Landscapes
Hiking from 7000 feet into the Grand Canyon took me through millions of years of geological history, but the route down from Rim to River also brought me through a range of ecological zones and microclimates. Each new vista was matched by arrangements of southwest wildflowers.
The cacti and yuccas were also in bloom.
In creek beds, seep zones, and protected areas there were more surprises, but there were discoveries in sand dunes, gravel beds, and on cliff faces too.
I read today that a hiker died of heat exhaustion down in the Grand Canyon. It was 114 degrees F. Spring instead brings milder weather and all the wildflower displays. That’s when I will return.
