A hike up the mountain above Barnhartvale

Driving Directions:

  • Drive east on highway #1 and turn at Dallas Drive (Dallas – Barnhartvale).   Turn up Todd Road.
  • At about 2.5 km up Todd Road, turn right onto Ronde Lane.
  • Park at the end of Ronde Lane.   The trailhead starts at the end of the road as an unsigned single track.

Trail:

  • The trail skirts the last driveway then climbs onto a dike.   At the end of the dike, it drops through a gully, then starts to climb up to the ridge.
  • The trail zigzags up the slope to the top of the ridge where there are fine viewpoints.
  • The Sunset Mountain Trail climbs the spine of the ridge to the top of the mountain.
  • There are several routes to the top including one that drops into a gully on the west side.
  • From the top of the mountain beyond are no trails, but it is possible to link onto other trails in the area, but there are parcels of grazing leases, fences, and private lands.
  • Most hikers return by the same trail, a 5 km return hike.
  • This is a steep hike, climbing 450m in just 1.5 km.
