Sunrise Mountain Hike
Sunrise Mountain stands above the western side of Barnhartvale. From the trailhead on Ronde Lane to the summit is a climb of 457 m (1500 feet). A single track trail winds up to a ridge, then goes up the ridge, a 2 km steep hike. There are several viewpoints along the way, with fine views over Barnhartvale and Dallas, across the silt cliffs, to the South Thompson River Valley and to the north (Harper Ridge, Harper Valley, Harper Mountain, Mt. Fleet, Mt. Lolo, and a series of forested hills). To the east we can see up the valley with Martin Mountain and to the southeast with Buse Hill and the Campbell Range.
The trail goes through open forest and across grassland ridges. Douglas fir forest is found in patches near the top of the mountain.
Although most of the trail is steep, there are some more moderate sections of scenic open forests.
At several points we can see down the river valley towards Valleyview and confluence of the rivers.
From the summit area we can look south over forested hills rising above the Campbell Creek Valley. There are some informal trails there too, coming off Pratt Road, but a lot of grazing leases too.
We had lunch on top of the mountain, then did a loop route on faint tracks around the summit hill and then back down the ridge to the start, in all, a 5.7 km hike. This is a scenic hike, but a harder one. Anyone who does this will need good boots, adequate fitness, and an ability to navigate the route up and down.
