Sugarloaf by Lundbom
A hike we return to each year is the Sugarloaf Mountain hike from Lundbom Lake. Lundbom Commonage is reached by driving on the Okanagan Connector from Merritt, then a left turn onto the Lundbom Lake Road. The good gravel road passes Marquart Lake and goes along the shores of Lundbom Lake. There are campsites on both ends of the lake. Just past a fence line near the north end of a lake, a side road goes over a ridge west to Hamilton Lake. We park on top of the hill and then we hike the double track to the marshy lake. At the far end of the lake, another clear double track climbs the slopes of Sugarloaf to the base of the bluffs, then a single track winds up to the top. Wide views await the hiker. On this day, we could see the snowy slopes of Stoyama Mountain at the north end of the Cascades and some distant Coquihalla Peaks to our south. Surrounding Sugarloaf are open hills of grasslands, ponds and lakes. This hike is only about 7 km return, unless you choose to explore other tracks (the Cocobonk Trail is nearby).
