Stony Lake Grasslands Hike
The Lac du Bois area was settled and homesteaded by pioneers between the 1870’s and the 1920’s. By the 1920’s, drought had driven out all homesteaders and the old buildings, fences, and fields were left to age. After 100 years, there are only a few remains to be seen – a few building frames, fences, field markers, and some heritage grain crops.
The Stony Lake route starts at 10.1 miles up the Lac du Bois Road, at a double track heading east at the last open area before McQueen Lake. Old homesteads and field markers can be spotted along the way. Ducks and grassland birds can be spotted in the ponds along the route. The main route has both double tracks and single tracks that go all the way through, but all of the open terrain in yellow can be walked by any route.
The route is about 4km one-way and hikers have the option to come back on the other side of the road to explore the pits, claims, and remnants on the north side of Lac du Bois.
