Snowshoeing Bush Lake
Snowshoeing season started in the latter part of December and I started off with an outing on the Bush Lake Trails. I have been going to Bush Lake North for the first snowshoe of the season for decades. I was pleased to find lots of snow and good tracks to follow, although I added another one. The parking lot was in good shape, but it was fairly full. Conditions were mild and the sun broke through the clouds as I snowshoed for 5.5 km.
The main track in (an old cross country ski track from the BC Winter Games Trails) in was in good shape. It had been tracked by fat tire bikes, snowshoes, and cross country skis. There are some older douglas fir trees on this section.
I chose a route that went around Bush Lake which turned out to be a sunny spot.
The low winter sun glared through light clouds across the marshy lake.
The loop route through the North Bush Lake Trails is mostly marked (the orange triangles and some of the flagging tape were my additions), but there were other tracks too, some new to me.
The route winds through douglas fir forest, some open cutblocks, and along some old double tracks to come back to the main access trails.
The snow was perfect for snowshoeing, the trails were quiet, the trees were mantled with snow, some birds and a squirrel were heard, and the temperature and conditions were everything we could want for a moderate winter snowshoe in the forested plateau area south of Kamloops.
