Low Iron – Triple Lumen Hike
We hiked a moderate loop route through the Ironmask Hills while the trails were still open for hiking and biking. The trails close for the season for Nov. 30 so we hiked on snowy trails for a 7.1 km route, choosing moderate trails, avoiding steep routes which may be slippery. We started at the original trailhead just off Lac le Jeune Drive (but the new parking area actually has better parking). We hiked up the Triple Lumen Trail and turned onto Spin Cycle to get to the Low Iron Trail.
There are a lot of steeper trails in the area, suitable for downhill riding which are not a good choice for hikers when bikes are active on the trails. The Low Iron Trail, though, winds around the hills with moderate climbs. We hiked in our boots without needing spikes.
We followed the Low Iron Trail, then took the High Iron Trail to pass two marshes.
There are shorter routes, but wanted to take trails that avoided steep sections so we continued from High Iron to the No Mayo Trail and back to the top of Triple Lumen
We finished the hike coming down Triple Lumen, just over two hours of hiking on the snow.
The Ironmask Trails (the West Side) will be closed from Dec. 1 to June 1st. The Pineview Trails will be closed until April 1st or weather permitting. Go to the KPCC Website for updates and more information. There are numerous posts on routes in this area. Use the Search Bar to find the articles (terms – Pineview, Ironmask, Coal Hill, etc.).
