On a warm summer day we got an early start and headed up to Heffley Lake.    We drove up the rough (high clearance) Embleton Road to the up to the upper parking lot.     The trails are well-signed at junctions.    We hiked the uphill traverse (Aspen Trail to the Pine Loop Trail) to the lookout where we stopped for our break.

Although there has been a history of logging on these hillsides, there are still some older douglas fir trees in pockets.    The trail winds up through the mixed forest areas to a replanted area at the top of the trail system.

At the lookout there is a small pavilion and we had our first wide views, looking west.

From the upper point, we hiked down the Skyline Trail, passing through some aspen groves.

The best views are found on the Skyline Trail, on top of the ridge.    Heffley Lake lies in the valley below with Mt. Lolo rising o the south side.

Our return hike was down the ridge and back on the Old Mills Trail, passing by two old mill sites.

There are 9.5 km of trails in the Embleton Trails system (link).     We hike a loop route on the trails every year.
