Brooks Point
Brooks Point Regional Park lies at the southeast corner of South Pender Island. There are some short trails through the forest, but the best parts of the park are the headlands that jut out into Boundary Pass. The rocky points provide views south to the San Juan Islands, east to Saturna Island and southeast to Mount Baker. It is especially fine at low tide when we can also explore the rocky tide pools under the bluffs.
Crustose lichens cover the rocky headlands. Orange lichens usually grow where bird droppings accumulate over time.
When the tide is out, there are small pocket beaches between rocky outcrops.
The tidal pools have lots of life to investigate.
We can hike under the cliffs near the point, where the ocean has sculpted the rock.
From the rocky points, Mount Baker rises from the mainland, 100 km distant.
From the headlands we can look out into Boundary Pass. US waters are only 1.8 km to the south. A steady parade of tankers plied the channel to and from from Washington State.
The trails end at a treed headland where we enjoyed 270 degree views. Brooks Point is a fine place for a short hike, with some exploration of the shoreline on the south end of South Pender Island.
