A Hidden Homestead in the Dry Hills
Most of the homesteads in the hills have been abandoned for over 100 years and there is not much to find, but a few have remained mostly hidden and forgotten. We can find them by accessing historical records and by using Google Earth. Then it requires hiking to the potential site to further investigate. We spotted an old site in the distance from a hilltop, and, a week later, I hiked 7 km to see the homestead/ranch cabin site firsthand. It was a grey day with a light snowfall.
The site had a small cabin, set up for 2 people. There was a larger out building, probably a barn, set into the hillside. There were corrals, fences, water troughs, some old vehicle parts and lots of debris.
I think the site might have been a seasonal operation, a remnant of cowboy life in the Dry Hills.

For all of the hidden homesteads articles, the locations are not provided, on purpose. Anyone can do the same research and explorations, but I know that few will, and that may result in the sites left intact for a few more years.
