Sunburst and Cerulean Lakes
In the Mount Assiniboine area, most hikers basecamp from Lake Magog and do day hikes on a number of trails and just about everyone does the lakes loop past Sunburst Lake, Cerulean Lake and Elizabeth Lake.
The most logical route is to take the trail up to the Niblet for the viewpoint then wind down toward Elizabeth Lake and the return by Cerulean and Sunburst Lake to Lake Magog, but there are a number of route options. At each part of the hike, there were new views. Each lake is quite different and depending on the angles are framed by either Sunburst Peak, the Nub, or Mount Assingiboine. With viewpoints, weather and light as variables, there are many opportunities for pleasing photos. On my trip down from the Nub, I stopped for a swim in Sunburst Lake on a sunny afternoon. A hiker was fishing on the other side and caught something. Hikers passed by, happy with the fine trail, wildflowers, and superior scenery. This is not a long, nor a demanding hike, but is an A+ for views. All photos by the author. Click an image for a lightbox view.
