Malkow Lookout
While we were in the Smithers area, we tried several of the hikes and we were very pleasantly surprised by the Malkow Lookout hike. The hike starts at the edge of pastures, winds through forests, then climbs a hill in the middle of the valley. There are wide view of the fields, hills, Bulkley River Valley, Babine Mountains, and Hudson Bay Mountain. This is a easy hike but worth the effort to find. We want to return here on our next trip.
Cross the Bulkley River Bridge and follow the Old Babine Lake Road for 3 km. Turn onto McCabe Road and follow it for 1.6km. Look for a parking area and sign on your left. Go through the gate, cross a meadow, and pick up the trail on the far side. The last part of the hike is on a double track to the top of the hill. Bring a lunch to enjoy the view from the top of the lookout. All photos by the author. Click an image for a lightbox view and a caption.
