Monashee Park – Valley of the Moon
If you have the opportunity to stay one extra day at Peters Lake in Monashee Provincial Park and you have already hiked Mt. Fosthall, then another good hike is to climb to Fawn Lake and beyond to the Valley of the Moon.
From Big Peters Lake, take narrow trail up the draw on the signed Margie Lake Trail, but watch for the junction and the trail (on your left) to Fawn Lake.
Climb up the thinly forested hillside and then through open alpine slopes. Proceed around the right side of Fawn Lake (which I thought would make a great camping spot) and climb into the open terrain of Valley of the Moon. The plateau sits at over 2000m so you will find open meadows, wildflowers, rocky ledges, numerous tarns, and exploration terrain. The route up across Gates Ledge is a gradual incline, but we couldn’t see much on that day. We want to return to this hike on a blue sky day to explore the upper part of Gates Ledge with views beyond to Mt. Odin.
Here is the BC Parks map too:
Hi Doug
I have hiked up to Fawn lake with the intention of hiking into Valley of the Moon. But was unable to
find clear signage on what direction to proceed in after i arrived at Fawn lake. I noticed that the map
you have attached to this page shows the trail on the right hand side of the lake. We did explore that
side of the lake but lost site of any trail markers. I have seen another map on the monashee provincial
park web site. That shows the trail on the left hand side of the lake. I have planned another trip Sept of 2012 and plan on trying to hike to valley of the moon. I know i was so close the first time. If you have any
additional information that could help me find the way to Valley of the Moon i would appreciate it. As this would be my third hike into Big Peters lake.
Thank you very much. judy
When I return to the lake this summer, I will bring my GPS and map the route.
Thank you, that would be great!!!!!!!!! Look forward to hearing from you!
Have a great trip. It is such a wonderful place to hike.
